February 2018 is a big month for me regarding crochet patterns. I'm reviewing the old ones and creating new patterns. Everything started with a question from a crocheter from Houston about how to work one of the free patterns I made in April 2012, Giant granny square. I could never imagine it would become so popular and it's really inspiring to see how many people around the globe liked and used it, creating more than 60 projects of their own. I will write a special post about it a bit later.
Right now I would like to present my latest free easy design based on a famous classic crochet motif - granny square. I had a special person in mind working on it, a big tea lover and incredible individual who can find everyday happiness in very simple things. The project of creating a tea cup coaster sounded perfect and I started my mork.
You can see on the picture my guardian angel - Sir Pinguin The Tartar, supervising the process.
As you can see, this squared coaster starts with 4 rows of a granny square, then a row of dc (double crochet) stitches, followed by a row of BPhdc (back post half double crochet) stitches and ends with crab stitches.
I love post stitches in general, they are always useful if you need to give some structure and shape to the crochet item. And crab stitches are wonderful to give a sort of a polished look to the final piece.
This project is a great opportunity to use small balls of leftover yarn and create a colorful item, which is perfect for a tea cup coaster, when you wake up on a dull rainy day and need something to cheer you up. I just finished a big 135 cm x 135 cm blanket, participating in Lilliana CAL (I'll tell the whole story later, in another post) and had some yarn left in vivid colors. In one evening I made 2 little cuties:
Wow! I just looked how do they look an a page from my desktop MAC monitor and they are huge! I took a real square an placed in on my monitor. You won't believe, it's the exact size of the image (if you read this using you smartphone, you just have to trust me. Nearly 13 cm x 13 cm! )))
And here is the same coaster made in green colors, showing my favorite tea cup. Yes, I love tea in big cups, they are my best companions when I need to finish a long article or another big job on my computer.
As most of my patterns, I published the chart and written instruction for the coaster on Darievna.ru. This pattern is available in two languages, in English and in Russian.
For pattern in English, please go to page "Granny square crochet coaster pattern". For instruction in Russian, please follow the link "Подставка крючком - бабушкин квадрат. Схема и описание".
If you know basic crochet skills it will take you about 1 hour to do the project and of course you can make as many coasters as you like.

Actually, in my first coasters I used completely other type of yarn and absolutely different colors. Let me show you the picture:
I used a leftover yarn from one more project, a tea set tablecloth, still pending to write a pattern. I have nearly done the chart and written instruction, so see you soon with a new free pattern. And I think it will be the first pattern ever published here at Kreative Kafe.
Good luck with your projects! I'm running to finish something else, meanwhile here are some more pictures of granny square tea cup free crochet pattern. Click on image to make it bigger.
Take care,
